Periphytic biofilms accumulate manganese, intercepting its emigration from paddy soil

چکیده
Manganese (Mn) in acidic paddy soil has large potential emigrating from the and pollute adjacent ecosystems. Single microorganisms modulate biogeochemistry process of Mn via redox reactions, while roles microbial aggregates (e.g. periphytic biofilm) modulating its biogeochemical cycle is poorly constrained. Here we collected a series biofilms fields China to explore how biofilm regulates behavior fields. We found that have accumulation potential: contents ranged 176 ± 38 797 271 mg/kg, which were 1.2–4.5 folds higher than corresponding soils. Field experiments verified potential, underlining function as natural barriers intercept soil. Extracellular polymeric substances, especially protein component, mediated adsorption was main mechanism behind by biofilm. Microorganisms general appeared inhibitory effects on accumulation. Climatic conditions nutrients floodwater affect microorganisms, thus indirectly affecting biofilms. This study provides quantitative information extent

variety of crops. Pot tests indicated that addition of about 200 p.p.m. of copper from copper sulfate produced a toxic reaction in soils low in copper, but otherwise comparable to Alsatian vineyard soils, which were found to contain as much as 400 p.p.m. of copper. Among the crops tested, vines were most resistant to copper toxicity; clover and alfalfa were most sensitive. Symptoms of copper po...
متن کاملDistribution and translocation of selenium from soil to grain and its speciation in paddy rice (Oryza sativa L.).
Selenium, an essential micronutrient for humans, is insufficient in dietary intake for millions of people worldwide. Rice as the most popular staple food in the world is one of the dominant selenium (Se) sources for people. The distribution and translocation of Se from soil to grain were investigated in a Se-rich environment in this study. The Se levels in soils ranged widely from 0.5 to 47.7 m...
متن کاملSoil Manganese Enrichment from Industrial Inputs: A Gastropod Perspective
Manganese is one of the most abundant metal in natural environments and serves as an essential microelement for all living systems. However, the enrichment of soil with manganese resulting from industrial inputs may threaten terrestrial ecosystems. Several studies have demonstrated harmful effects of manganese exposure by cutaneous contact and/or by soil ingestion to a wide range of soil invert...
